In a major push to reduce traffic congestion and improve road connectivity, the Uttar Pradesh government is set to convert 21 state highways into four-lane roads by widening them from their current width of 714 meters to 14-25 meters. The Public Works Department (PWD) has completed the survey and submitted the proposal to the state government for approval.
These highways, including three in Varanasi and two in Hardoi, will undergo significant upgrades as part of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s directive to widen all state highways. The initiative also aims to strengthen connectivity between district headquarters, with a plan to widen 107 more state highways by 10 meters during the current financial year.
Among the key routes included in the proposal are:
-Jagdishpur State Highway to connect Amethi with Sultanpur, Pratapgarh, and Raebareli.
-Bahraich-Bhinga-Sirsia-Chaudhary Deeh Road.
-Deoria–Kasva Padrauna Highway for improved access to Kushinagar International Airport and the Agricultural University.
-Panwadi State Highway in Jalaun, where pending work from the past decade will be resumed.
-Bilgram–Unnao–Prayagraj Road and BSA State Highway in Hardoi, identified due to high accident rates.
-Varanasi’s Chaubeypur Road, Varanasi–Kachhwa Road, and Kachhwa–Chaubeypur Road.
Additional roads set for four-lane development include:
-Fatehgarh–Gursahayganj Road (Farrukhabad)
-Gosaiganj–Bani–Mohaan Road (Lucknow)
-Bilgram–Unnao–Bilgram Road (Unnao)
-Moradabad–Bulandshahr Road (Bulandshahr and Moradabad)
-Baraut–Meerut Road (Meerut)
-Lumbini Road (Sonbhadra)
-Bulandshahr Road (Sambhal)
-Khatima Road (Muzaffarnagar)
-Kanchanpur–Madhupur Road (Chandauli)
-Prayagraj–Gorakhpur Road (Jaunpur)

The state currently has 142 state highways. This ambitious project is part of the government's effort to ensure smoother travel, reduce accidents, and enhance regional development through better road infrastructure.
