Your next food delivery might cost a bit more, thanks to a new GST rule. From September 22, online food platforms like Swiggy and Zomato have started charging 18 per cent Goods and Services Tax (GST) on delivery fees, making your bill slightly higher than before. The change quickly caught social media’s attention, with users making fun at the new charges. One X post joked, “After historic GST reforms, even Lord Indra has been brought under the tax net. Now when in rains, you get Rs 25 Rain Fee + 18% GST = Rs 29.50. Next up: Sunlight Convenience Fee, Oxygen Maintenance Charge GST on Breathing, Pay as you inhale."
The post also included a screenshot of a typical order breakdown: Restaurant GST at Rs 14.75, delivery rain fee of Rs 25 plus Rs 4.50 GST, restaurant packaging at Rs 20, and platform fee of Rs 14.99. This bizarre rain fee caught social media attention.
This new rule ensures GST is applied uniformly, but it also means your favourite biryani or pizza could cost a little extra when it arrives at your doorstep.

The viral post shared on X (Formerly Twitter) by the handle '@AshishGupta325' just a day ago pulled 380k views from users. "Good that delivery companies started considering the delivery guys as humans and compensate them for their effort to bring food to your home in rain, that too on Indian roads," a user wrote.
"True! At this rate, even sneezing will be a taxable event. ‘One sneeze – ₹5 health cess + 18% GST’. Government treasury = always green, citizens = always broke!" a second user wrote. "Nowadays soo many extra charges on to customers, it should be product price + service charge... Let's clear out confusion and bring regulations in place," wrote a third user.
"Same food Pre GST rate cut was cheaper and now it has become costlier. I had also posted few images from both Swiggy and Zomato. They have increased their delivery fee, Packaging fee etc," added another user. "Think about delivery persons, they put in extra effort for delivery. This much extra can be paid to them," wrote another user.
