What’s Wrong With India: If the ‘twist and turns’ that the viral ‘What’s Wrong With India’ trend witnessed in the last 10 to 13 days could have had a visual representation, it would surely be Michael Gary Scott’s ‘how the turntables’ scene from the hit sitcom ‘The Office’. Confused? Well, allow us to elaborate. Recently, a trend by the name ‘What’s Wrong With India’ went viral on social media, where many believed that the aim was to ‘tarnish’ India’s image. The trend was going viral on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), and the trend users, you guessed it, were mostly NOT Indians. However, the aim took a U-turn just today, after the mighty Indians came to the rescue! ‘How’, you ask? Take a look. But first, let’s see what the trend was and how it began.
What is the trend?
The trend was basically exactly how it sounded. People from across the world were sharing videos ‘promoting’ Indian stereotypes, along with the hashtag ‘What’s Wrong With India’. Many also believed that the X algorithm played a part in making the trend go viral real quick. The trend reached the level where lakhs of users began to recall and share some or the other content ‘tarnishing’ India’s image, which was only increasing in number. But what was the reason behind the sudden ‘attack’?
Why did the trend begin?
The trend was triggered a few days ago after a Spanish woman traveler was gang-raped by seven men in Jharkhand’s Dumka. The woman was camping along with her husband, when the horrible incident took place on March 01. So far, the police have reportedly arrested 4 accused in the matter, while the search for the rest is still going on. It was this incident, which led to people sharing their not-so-good experiences related to India on social media, which began to take speed. However, in a span of just a few days, the trend took another dark turn as people began to share Indian stereotypes and other uncalled-for content that was far from the real incident that birthed the trend.

Indians come to the rescue!
Today, the trend took another U-turn, as Indians finally entered the ‘arena’. Since the original trend was diverted long back from the Jharkhand case, Indians also decided to ‘fight back’ against the unrelated X memes and posts. Taking to X, Indians began to share videos relating to other countries, where people were seen doing stuff that they definitely should NOT be doing in public, but the hashtag still read ‘What’s Wrong With India’. The aim, as per reports, was to prove that the X algorithm was promoting content against India, along with ‘fighting back’ against ‘What’s Wrong With India’.
The X handle of the Government of India also joined in on the trend.
