A Croatia Airlines Airbus A220-300 skidded partially off the runway at Croatia’s Split Airport on Saturday after pilots aborted take-off during a flight bound for Frankfurt, prompting an evacuation of all passengers and crew.

The aircraft, registered 9A-CAN and operating as flight OU412, departed the paved surface during its take-off roll on runway 23 before coming to a halt with part of the plane resting on the grass beside the runway. Authorities said the reason behind the aborted take-off remains unclear.

According to Split Airport official Mate Melvan, the incident occurred during braking after the crew decided to reject take-off. Croatian aviation outlet AIN reported that one of the aircraft’s landing-gear wheels left the asphalt surface following the aborted departure.

Dramatic images and videos circulating on social media appeared to show the aircraft deploying reverse thrust moments before leaving the runway. Footage also suggested the plane’s left Pratt & Whitney PW1500G engine may have clipped an airfield sign during the excursion, though officials have not confirmed the extent of any damage.

Croatia Airlines said the crew followed emergency procedures and brought the aircraft to a safe stop. All 132 passengers and five crew members evacuated normally, with no injuries reported.

Airport recovery teams later began efforts to remove the aircraft from the runway area. The A220 involved in the incident had been delivered to Croatia Airlines less than a year ago as part of the carrier’s fleet modernisation programme focused on Airbus narrowbody jets.

As the aircraft descended toward the runway, powerful side winds destabilised the jet, causing it to sway sharply from left to right. The wings could be seen rocking visibly as the pilots struggled to maintain alignment with the runway.
