Covid In Asia: Hong Kong and Singapore have issued a high alert after witnessing a sharp rise in Covid-19 infections amid a new wave spreading across many parts of Asia, Bloomberg reported. Covid-19 activity in Hong Kong is now "quite high", according to Albert Au, head of the Communicable Disease Branch of the city’s Center for Health Protection. Singapore is also on a high alert as the health ministry issued an update on infection numbers. Daily hospitalizations also saw an estimated 30 per cent rise
Hong Kong Covid Cases
Data from the Center for Health Protection reveals a concerning rise in severe cases, including deaths, reaching their highest point in approximately a year, with 31 reported in the week ending May 3.
Singer Eason Chan, from Hong Kong had to cancel his concerts in Kaohsiung, Taiwan after contracting Covid-19, as per a post on the concert’s official Weibo account.
Singapore Covid Cases
Singapore saw a 28 per cent rise in estimated cases to 14,200 in the week completing on May 3, compared to the preceding seven days. As per Singapore’s health ministry there is currently “no indication that the circulating variants are more transmissible or cause more severe cases than during the pandemic."
Situation In Asia
As per the data from the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, China is also likely to see a Covid-19 wave reaching the summer peak observed last year. The test positivity rate for Covid among patients seeking diagnoses at hospitals across mainland China more than doubled in the five weeks leading up to May 4.
Department of Disease Control in Thailand also reported two cluster outbreaks in 2025, with cases increasing following April’s annual Songkran festival.
