Nepal PM Balen Shah on Sunday said that his country has also encroached upon some Indian territories, while reiterating Kathmandu's claim on areas like Kalapani, Lipulekh, etc. His remarks mark the first such public statement by the head of the Nepali government.
"After becoming prime minister, I came to know that not only has India encroached on Nepal’s land, but Nepal has also encroached on India’s land in multiple places," Shah said, emphasising a need to resolve the issue through diplomatic dialogue.
Shah was responding to a question by a lawmaker in the Nepali Parliament, House of Representatives, for the first time since assuming office as the PM. He further added that both countries have agreed to take the help of historians, surveyors and experts to resolve a long-standing border dispute.
Located at a trijunction of India, Nepal and Tibet, New Delhi has maintained that Kalapani, Lipulekh, and Limpiyadhura are not disputed lands but sovereign territories and part of the Uttarakhand state.

Shah said in Parliament, "The Nepal government has officially sent a diplomatic note to India raising the issue of India's occupation of the area, including Lipulekh, and we have received their response."
He further claimed, "Both countries have agreed to resolve the issue through diplomatic means by sitting together, with the help of historians, surveyors and relevant experts."
Saying that the alleged dispute dates back to the colonial times, he added that Nepal has also held diplomatic talks with China and Britain on the issue.
"We have spoken not only with India and China but also with the UK government. Our view is that the UK should also take an interest, as the issue dates back to the period when British India left the region,” Shah was quoted as saying by the Kathmandu Post.
