  1. Qatar Airways flight QR630 appeared near Jammu on flight trackers.
  2. Technical glitch and faulty GPS data caused the tracking error.
  3. Aircraft landed safely at its intended destination, Sialkot Airport.

A Qatar Airways flight heading from Doha to Sialkot sparked confusion after flight-tracking platforms showed the aircraft near Jammu instead of its actual destination. Several Pakistani news outlets highlighted the unusual tracking data, with FlightRadar24 showing flight QR630 as diverting towards Jammu while it was on approach to Sialkot.

However, the aircraft did not land in Jammu. Sialkot International Airport later tweeted that the plane safely arrived at Sialkot Airport on September 27 and left for Doha as scheduled. An airport spokesperson, Umair Khan, said the wrong location was put up due to a technical glitch and faulty GPS data.

What Happened To Qatar Airways QR630?

The Doha-Sialkot flight reached the region during a period when unusual GPS-related disruptions were being reported around the Sialkot-Jammu sector. Tracking information showed the aircraft at Jammu airport while it was en route to Sialkot, leading to speculation that it was diverted.

Aviation experts said such errors can occur due to GPS spoofing, signal jumps or glitches in Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) data used by third-party tracking websites. These errors can make an aircraft appear at an incorrect location even when the flight is operating normally.

Why Did Jammu Appear On The Flight Tracker?

Experts, as cited by Geo News, said the close distance between Sialkot and Jammu, around 40 kilometres, could be one reason why tracking systems displayed Jammu when location data became unreliable.

They added that such tracking errors do not necessarily indicate any problem with the aircraft’s own navigation system. Instead, the mismatch can happen between satellite signals and the data processed by online flight-tracking services.

Similar Errors Reported Earlier

The QR630 incident was not the first such case reported in the region. Earlier in June, multiple flights approaching Sialkot were also shown at incorrect locations on tracking platforms despite landing normally.

A Dubai-Sialkot flight was reportedly shown as diverted towards Jammu, while other flights from Sharjah and Dubai also displayed incorrect locations during their approach. Similar tracking discrepancies have also been observed for flights operating to Lahore.

What Is GPS spoofing?

GPS spoofing is a form of electronic interference in which fake Global Positioning System (GPS) signals are transmitted to deceive navigation systems. Aircraft rely heavily on satellite-based GPS to determine their exact position, altitude, and flight path.

In spoofing, attackers send stronger counterfeit signals than real satellite signals, causing the aircraft’s navigation system to calculate an incorrect location. Instead of merely blocking signals, also known as jamming, spoofing manipulates them, which makes it more dangerous because pilots may initially trust the wrong data.
