Reko Diq Mining Project: The primary stakeholder of the Reko Diq mining project in Balochistan, Barrick Mining, has announced an immediate, comprehensive audit of the Reko Diq project, including construction schedules and financial allocations. As per the company, the decision has been due to security concerns in the Balochistan region.

According to a report by Reuters, Barrick Mining CEO Mark Hill said that the decision has been taken after the recent escalation of security risks and a rise in security incidents in the province. A detailed progress report will be released once this evaluation is finalised.

Barrick Mining's decision came amid rise in militant attacks in Balochistan region, with Pakistani soldiers hunting down separatists. The coordinated militant attacks earlier this week claimed nearly 50 lives across southwestern Balochistan province.

The Reko Diq mine is an essential project for Pakistan, with the US investing USD 1.3 billion to extract gold and copper from the mineral-rich site located in Balochistan near Pakistan-Iran border. The Reko Diq project is a massive USD 7 billion venture expected to begin production by the end of 2028.

Project Development And Partnership

The project is being developed by the Canadian mining giant Barrick Mining Corp in partnership with Pakistani authorities. The American investment will be facilitated through the Export-Import Bank of the United States (EXIM).

Ownership Structure And Security Concerns

The ownership of the project is divided as follows:

Barrick Gold: 50 per cent stake

Federal Government Companies (Pakistan): 25 per cent stake

Balochistan Provincial Government: 25 per cent stake

Despite the high stakes, security remains a primary concern as Balochistan frequently faces attacks from separatists and insurgents. Additionally, the project requires significant infrastructure upgrades, specifically the railway lines, to transport copper concentrate to Karachi for overseas processing.

Financing And Economic Impact

According to a report by Reuters, a financing package exceeding USD 2.6 billion is being organised by several lenders, including the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

For Pakistan, Reko Diq is a cornerstone of its national mineral strategy. The Shehbaz Sharif government has welcomed the US investment, viewing it as a "vote of confidence" in the country's mining sector and ongoing economic reforms. Islamabad anticipates that the project will generate billions of dollars in revenue over its lifespan, providing a much-needed boost to the nation's cash-strapped economy.
