US Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi has strongly condemned recent remarks by Florida politician Chandler Langevin, who called for the mass deportation of Indian immigrants, describing the comments as “dangerous” and reminiscent of the Trump-era ICE raids.

Langevin, a conservative member of the Palm Bay City Council, sparked outrage after posting a series of inflammatory statements on X (formerly Twitter), accusing Indians of “destroying the South” and demanding their immediate removal from the United States. His remarks have drawn sharp criticism from lawmakers, civil rights groups, and members of the Indian American community.

Reacting to the comments, Congressman Krishnamoorthi said, “It’s unacceptable, and dangerous, that in 2025 we’re hearing elected officials call for the mass removal of Indian Americans. This rhetoric echoes the cruelty of Donald Trump’s mass ICE raids and fuels a climate of fear that harms families across our nation.”

The Indian-origin Democrat, who represents Illinois in the US House of Representatives, warned that such divisive speech weakens the fabric of American democracy. “When hate speech is normalised and communities are scapegoated, our democracy is weakened,” he said. Krishnamoorthi urged leaders at all levels to take a firm stand against hate speech and discrimination, stressing that the United States must remain a nation that welcomes people regardless of race, accent, or country of origin.“We must stand together across every community against all forms of hate. Protecting our democracy means ensuring everyone can live free from fear and discrimination, no matter their skin colour, accent, or country of origin,” he added.

Langevin’s Remarks Spark Outrage

Chandler Langevin, elected to the Palm Bay City Council last year, has been criticised for repeatedly targeting Indian immigrants in recent weeks. Since mid-September, he has made at least five derogatory social media posts aimed at the Indian diaspora.

In one post, he accused Indians of “destroying the South.” In another, he reacted to a Department of Homeland Security post about a fatal crash involving an Indian truck driver by writing, “Deport every Indian immediately.”On October 2, Langevin doubled down, writing, “Today is my birthday and all I want is for @realDonaldTrump to revoke every Indian visa and deport them immediately. America for Americans.”

The remarks triggered widespread backlash, prompting Palm Bay Mayor Rob Medina to issue a statement saying, “Words that demean or devalue others have no place in the Palm Bay we aspire to be.” Despite the condemnation, Langevin has not apologised and continues to defend his comments online.

Indian American Community Denounces Hate Speech

Community leaders and advocacy groups have condemned the remarks as racist and deeply concerning. Many pointed out that Indian Americans contribute significantly to the US economy, technology, and healthcare sectors, and that such rhetoric only fosters division.“This kind of language is dangerous. It not only targets one community but threatens the spirit of inclusivity that defines America,” said a representative from the Indian American Civil Rights Coalition.
