Typhoon Bavi: Super Typhoon Bavi on Saturday made landfall in eastern China, bringing strong winds and heavy rainfall to the coastal city of Taizhou. Nearly two million people were evacuated across affected areas as part of emergency measures. The storm had earlier passed near Japan’s southern islands and northern Taiwan, causing widespread disruptions.
Typhoon Bavi Hits China’s Zhejiang Coast
According to Reuters report, citing China’s National Meteorological Center, Typhoon Bavi made landfall in Taizhou city in Zhejiang province at around 11:20 pm local time. At the time of landfall, the storm had maximum sustained winds of around 144 km per hour. Videos that emerged online showed powerful winds and rising waters as the storm battered China’s eastern coast.
Nearly 2 Million People Evacuated
Authorities evacuated more than 1.7 million people in Zhejiang province. More than 100,000 people each were evacuated from neighbouring Fujian province and Beijing, while around 34,000 people were moved from Shanghai. Before reaching China, Typhoon Bavi passed near Taiwan. The island government evacuated more than 14,000 people, mainly from mountainous areas.
While Japan and Taiwan have not reported any deaths from Bavi, the Philippines reported 17 deaths due to heavy rains linked to the southwest monsoon, which was intensified by the typhoon. While Bavi has weakened now, officials have warned that it still carries a large amount of moisture, which can lead to heavy rainfall and flooding.
🇨🇳 China is not just dealing with one typhoon right now. It's dealing with 2, simultaneously, on opposite ends of the country.
