Diwali Bank Holiday: Banks across several Indian states will remain closed on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, in observance of Govardhan Pooja, a festival celebrated after Diwali. This festival commemorates Lord Krishna lifting the Govardhan hill to shield the people of Vrindavan from heavy rains and storms, as noted in the Reserve Bank of India’s region-wise holiday calendar.

On October 22, banks will be closed in cities including Ahmedabad, Belapur, Bengaluru, Dehradun, Gangtok, Jaipur, Kanpur, Lucknow, Mumbai, and Nagpur. The holiday coincides with Diwali celebrations and other regional observances such as Vikram Samvat New Year Day, Balipadyami, and Laxmi Puja.

Upcoming Bank Holidays In October 2025

October 23: Banks closed for Bhai Bij (Bhai Dooj), Chitragupt Jayanti, Laxmi Puja, Bhratridwitiya, and Ningol Chakkouba in Ahmedabad, Gangtok, Imphal, Kanpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, and Shimla.

October 27: Banks closed in Kolkata, Patna, and Ranchi for Chhath Puja.

October 28: Banks closed in Patna and Ranchi for Chhath Puja.

October 31: Banks closed in Ahmedabad for Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s Birthday.

Online Banking Services During Holidays

While branches remain closed, online banking, mobile apps, and ATMs continue to operate, allowing customers to carry out financial transactions without disruption. It is recommended to complete any branch-dependent work in advance to avoid last-minute issues.

Extended Diwali Observances

In some states, Diwali festivities extend beyond 22 October. For instance, Bhai Dooj (celebrated mostly in northern India) is observed on 23 October. Banks are expected to reopen for in-person services on 24 October before the regular weekend closures on 25-26 October.
