The hassle of waiting days for withdrawing funds from your Provident Fund account is about to end soon. The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) is set to launch "EPFO 3.0," a transformative upgrade designed to modernise the retirement savings system. The new initiative will integrate core banking technology to make withdrawing funds as seamless as using an ATM or making a UPI payment. This will potentially turn a process that once took days or weeks into one that takes mere seconds.

What is EPFO 3.O?

The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) is preparing to launch EPFO 3. O to modernise its system, making the entire PF withdrawal process digital and faster. Previously, employees had to submit claims online to withdraw PF funds, which sometimes took days or weeks. However, with the new system, this process will be completed almost instantly.

Technology will change

The biggest change under EPFO 3. O will be that employees will be able to withdraw money directly from their PF accounts through UPI and ATMs, meaning PF accounts will be made similar to bank accounts, allowing for instant cash withdrawals or direct transfers to bank accounts via UPI. To achieve this, the EPFO is integrating its system with technologies like core banking, allowing transactions to be processed in real time.

However, PF withdrawal rules are not taking a complete flip. Withdrawals will be permitted under existing rules—for example, full withdrawals after retirement or the full balance after two months in case of unemployment. Partial withdrawals will remain possible only for needs such as marriage, medical treatment, education, or home purchase, and the limits will remain the same, subject to the established conditions.

PF withdrawal limits will remain as per existing rules:

The entire PF balance can be withdrawn upon retirement.

100% withdrawal is permitted after two months of unemployment.

Partial Withdrawal

For marriage: Up to 50 per cent of the employee's contribution.

For education: Up to 50 per cent.

Medical emergency: Depending on need (in many cases, the entire amount is also possible.)

For buying/building a house: Limits will be based on salary and service period.

Under the EPFP 3.0, withdrawing money through an ATM or UPI will be easier, but the amount you can withdraw will depend on your needs and the EPFO's established rules.

The government is working to make the system more like core banking, which will ensure instant transaction processing and significantly reduce claim settlement time. Testing of UPI-based withdrawals is also considered almost complete and will be implemented soon.
