BCB-BCCI Row, T20 World Cup 2026: The ongoing standoff between the Bangladesh Cricket Board and the BCCI around the T20 World Cup 2026 is yet to reach its conclusion. The marquee tournament is scheduled to be played in India and Sri Lanka from February 7, but the BCB is yet to receive any response from the International Cricket Council (ICC) regarding their request for a change in the venues for their matches.
Bangladesh have expressed reluctance to tour India for the tournament and have sought to shift their matches to co-host Sri Lanka, citing security concerns. The BCB's apprehensions followed the release of Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman from IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders on the instructions of the BCCI for unspecified reasons, amid reports of attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh.
Amid all the chaos, the BCB has expressed their "willingness to work closely" with the global governing body to ensure the "full and uninterrupted participation" of the Bangladesh team in the 2026 T20 World Cup. Earlier, it was reported that the ICC rejected BCB's request for a late change in the venues and that they would forfeit points if they refused to play in India. Notably, Bangladesh, in Group C, are scheduled to play their first three matches in Kolkata: on February 7 (vs West Indies), February 9 (vs Italy) and February 14 (vs England), with their final group game, against Nepal, in Mumbai on February 17.

The current stance of the BCB may win domestic backing for now, but it risks long-term isolation in international cricket. With alleged support from an interim government known for anti-India rhetoric, the move looks more political than sporting. Even if they threaten to pull out of the 2026 T20 World Cup over an unfavourable ICC response, the real damage will be theirs—ICC, BCCI, and global cricket will move on regardless.

The ICC has three realistic ways to ensure a smooth and unaffected conduct of the 10th edition of the T20 World Cup. The first option is to approve a venue switch for Bangladesh’s group matches to Sri Lanka without ripping up the tournament. That preserves the 20-team format and contains the issues around logistics.

As per the second option, if the ICC refuses and Bangladesh still avoids playing their T20 WC matches in India, the global body could let the tournament run with awarded matches. It means Bangladesh’s opponents would be handed wins and points, while their campaign is functionally dead.
What If Bangladesh Pulls Out Of T20 World Cup 2026
Option three is full withdrawal from the competition. This would force the ICC to decide whether a late replacement can be made in time or treat Bangladesh’s fixtures as forfeits. Replacement is clearer for competitive integrity, but becomes harder.
Notably, there isn't any automated reserve list for T20 World Cups that guarantees who replaces a withdrawing side. Scotland are the most likely possible team as per their higher ranking as an Associate team and have World Cup experience under their belt as well. Zimbabwe withdrew from the 2009 T20 World Cup, and Scotland replaced them, with the ICC confirming the swap.
There are other options from different regional qualifications, but the ICC would be hoping to execute major plans with the team that can mobilise quickly and does not create fresh scheduling headaches.
