India vs New Zealand: India's former captain Virat Kohli, uncharacteristically, missed out on a probable ton during the first ODI match against New Zealand at the BCA Stadium in Vadodara. Featuring in his 624th international game, Kohli banked on his incredibly successful template of moving the scorecard in a chase, and he did exactly that during India's response to New Zealand's 300 for 8 in the first innings.
Notably, Kohli smashed 93 off 91 as he made batting look incredibly easy against New Zealand's bowling attack. Kohli played his shots at will, collecting eight boundaries and 1 six in his knock.
Kohli's vigil ended after he failed to evade the New Zealand captain, Michael Bracewell, at the mid-on position. As soon as Kohli's knock, the crowd got completely stunned. However, with the 38-year-old walking back after the knock, he was greeted by a round of applause from the crowd, which saw a masterful innings unfold in front of them. Check out the video here:
Kohli Surpasses Sangakkara
Kohli became the fastest player to achieve 28000 runs in international Cricket as he achieved it in his 624th inning. Sri Lankan legend Kumar Sangakkara, to become only the third player in the 28000-run club, crossed the feat in his 666th innings, while Indian legend Sachin Tendulkar took 66
The 37-year-old Kohli had come into the match with 27975 runs across formats in international cricket. Tendulkar scored 34357 runs from 782 innings, while Sangakkara made 28016 runs from 644th inning.
In February 2023, Kohli became the fastest batter to reach 25,000 runs, achieving the mark in 549 innings, 28 innings quicker than Tendulkar.
In October 2023, Kohli went past 26,000 runs as the quickest to the landmark. A year later, in September 2024, he reached 27,000 runs in his 594th innings.
