India captain Shubman Gill will be available for the first ODI against West Indies on Sunday despite picking up a blow to his right elbow during Friday’s training session.
Gill was hit by a delivery from Mohammed Siraj while batting in the nets in Thiruvananthapuram. The India captain was visibly uncomfortable after being struck and left the session without returning to bat.
He was given treatment by team physiotherapist Kamlesh Jain, with ice and strapping applied to the affected area. Reports also suggested that Gill dropped his bat after taking the blow and walked away from the nets in pain.
India batting coach provides update
The injury had raised concerns over Gill’s availability for the series opener, but India batting coach Sitanshu Kotak has now provided a positive update. Kotak confirmed that Gill is fit and ready to play against West Indies.
“Gill is fine. He’s good to go,” Kotak said.
Gill set to lead India
The first ODI between India and West Indies will be played on September 27 at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram. Gill will lead India in the opening match, with experienced campaigners Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma also part of the squad.
