IND vs WI: India's star batter Shreyas Iyer has told the board that he has decided to take a break from this format owing to a stiff back and fatigue issue, as per the Indian Express. Iyer, who was leading India A from the front, will be giving the second unofficial Test against Australia A a miss. Although initially the reason wasn't known at that time, the report said that Iyer had sent an email to the BCCI after having a word with chief selector Ajit Agarkar.
The report also revealed that he had told the selectors that he was experiencing stiffness in his back and that his body couldn't bear the effects of this format anymore. He can't stay on the field for more than 4 days due to this issue, and he will be playing in this format only when his body lets him.
"He has informed us that he (Iyer) will be taking a break from red ball cricket, and it's good that he has cleared it out because selectors are now clear about his future. He won't be playing red ball cricket in the coming months, and he has informed the board that he will assess his body in the future in consultation with physios and trainer and take a call on it," a source was quoted as saying to the Indian Express.
As per the report, Iyer was supposed to be selected in India's squad for the two-match Test series against the West Indies. He was also seen leading the India A team in order to prepare for this series. But the latest development shows that he won't be playing in this series.
Iyer did play during the first India A match against Australia A, where he scored 8 and 13 runs. He was also dismissed controversially in spinner Corey Rocchiccioli's over.
