Mizoram Schools Closed: The Mizoram government has announced the closure of schools in four districts on Wednesday in response to ongoing heavy rainfall, officials said.
District administrations in Aizawl, Lunglei, Hnahthial, and Mamit have issued public notices stating that all schools will remain closed as a precautionary measure due to severe weather conditions and torrential rain affecting these regions.
Landslide Warnings In Aizawl
The Aizawl district administration's notice highlighted that landslides, mudslides, and rockfalls have been observed in several areas within Aizawl town and its surrounding villages. The notice also warned of the possibility of further incidents in certain areas within the district.
Previous School Closures
Last week, schools in Aizawl and Kolasib districts were closed for five consecutive days due to heavy rain. Moreover, schools in the southern district of Siaha were closed for a few days for the same reason.
Torrential Rainfall Since August 20
Mizoram has been experiencing torrential rainfall since August 20, leading to landslides and landslips in multiple locations. On Wednesday, landslides were reported on several key roads in Aizawl and other parts of the state. Efforts are underway to clear these roads.
According to the officials, no casualties have been reported so far in connection with the landslides and other incidents caused by the heavy rain. As per the state's disaster management and rehabilitation department, at least 42 people have lost their lives in landslides and other natural calamities across Mizoram since March of this year.
