Gyanesh Kumar's Educational Qualifications:

India’s Chief Election Commissioner, Gyanesh Kumar, boasts an impressive academic background that spans premier national and international institutions. Originally hailing from Agra, he completed his initial schooling at Colvin Taluqdars' College in Lucknow before clearing competitive exams to secure a seat at IIT Kanpur.

He earned his B.Tech degree in Civil Engineering in 1985, receiving academic excellence awards, before completing postgraduate studies in Business Finance from ICFAI and Environmental Economics at Harvard University.

How Did His IAS Career Progress Before Joining the Election Commission?

After completing his studies, he passed the UPSC test to join the Kerala cadre IAS in 1988. He held important state positions during his administrative career, including Municipal Commissioner of Cochin and District Collector of Ernakulam.

He handled Jammu and Kashmir matters as a Joint/Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs at the Union level. Later, he was Secretary in the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs and Ministry of Cooperation.

When Was He Appointed as Chief Election Commissioner?

Right after his retirement as Union Cooperation Secretary in January 2024, Gyanesh Kumar was appointed as an Election Commissioner in March 2024. He subsequently took charge as the 26th Chief Election Commissioner of India on February 19, 2025.
