Radhakrishnan Committee Reforms: NTA Introduces Facial Biometrics And Live Photography For 2026 Entrance Exams

NTA New Exam Security: Higher Education Secretary Vineet Joshi has confirmed that the National Testing Agency (NTA) will introduce revolutionise exam security by introducing real-time facial biometric verification and live photography at the application stage. This process will begin with the JEE (Main) in January 2026, requiring candidates to undergo facial recognition during the exam and provide live photography during the initial application stage to ensure that the person applying is the same one appearing for the test.

These Innovative steps are a direct response to the recommendations of the R. Radhakrishnan committee, which called for major changes to the testing system following the NEET-UG 2024 controversies. By analysing facial features through AI-based digital templates, the NTA aims to create a tamper-proof system that eliminates the possibility of impersonation and other malpractices in the JEE, NEET-UG, and CUET examinations.

AI-Powered Identity Verification:

Facial biometrics verification analyses specific facial features such as the distance between the eyes or the shape of the nose to firmly establish an individual's identity, creating a digital template for comparison with stored data. Meanwhile, real-time photography via webcam or phone is used for offline applications to verify the candidate's identity even before the exam begins.

Radhakrishnan Committee's Reform Roadmap:

The seven-member panel headed by former ISRO chief R. Radhakrishnan has outlined a two-phase plan for reforms. The short-term phase, to be implemented immediately, includes restructuring the NTA and implementing multi-level biometric verification. The long-term "Phase 2" envisions the implementation of a "Digi-Exam" platform, utilising the DigiYatra model used for biometric-based digital systems at airports.

Comprehensive Multi-Level Security:

To further prevent malpractices during the examination, the committee has proposed multi-level biometric verification at the selection, test center, evaluation, and counseling stages. This comprehensive approach ensures that candidates are identified and verified at every touchpoint of their academic journey, making the Indian entrance examination system one of the most secure in the world.

About National Testing Agency (NTA):

NTA was established in 2017 and conducts several major entrance examinations, including JEE (Main) for engineering admissions, NEET-UG for medical courses, and the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) for undergraduate and postgraduate programs in central universities.

JEE Main 2026 Plan:

The Joint Entrance Examination (Main) 2026, which will feature these high-tech security measures for the first time, is scheduled to be held from January 21 to 30, 2026. Students are advised to prepare for the live photography process by having their documents ready by 2025.
