Anurag Kashyap has stirred controversy by calling Bollywood toxic and planning to relocate to Bengaluru, as he enjoys working in the South film industry. Following this, he made a new statement about his much-anticipated action thriller Kennedy, starring Rahul Bhat and Sunny Leone, which is yet to be released despite gaining attention after its screening at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival. Kashyap revealed that the film has already received approval from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), but its fate now rests in the hands of ZEE Studios.

Anurag Kashyap discussed his directorial Kennedy in an interview with The Hindu. He shared, “Kennedy is locked and has been cleared by the censors. But ZEE has lost a lot of money on the recent films they released, and all the people who produced the film have left the company."

The filmmaker also explained how the idea for Kennedy came about. He revealed that he originally wrote the script for Malayalam superstar Mohanlal and had planned to collaborate with his cinematographer Rajeev Ravi to direct it. When that didn’t work out, Kashyap repurposed the narrative and transformed it into Kennedy.

Talking about the film's protagonist, Kashyap mentioned that he had envisioned the character for a long time. “The central character of Kennedy, an undercover cop named Uday Shetty, has stayed with me for a long time. Sudhir Mishra narrated the story to me. There was actually one such man in the Mumbai force. In fact, I have a sequel web series in mind where the character survives the events of Kennedy," he explained.

Kashyap also shared his experience pitching other ideas to a streaming platform. Due to creative differences, he decided to back off. “The platform really wanted it, but their feedback was too insecure and algorithm-based. It was destroying the soul of the show. I was pitching something else, and they wanted to turn it into Money Heist. I folded my hands and left," he stated.
