Anurag Kashyap has been under huge scrutiny ever since he made a controversial remark regarding the Brahmin community. Now, the filmmaker got into legal trouble after a complaint was filed against him, following which the JMFC court in Surat issued a notice ordering him to appear in Court on May 7, 2025. According to reports, the notice was issued based on a complaint lodged by a lawyer, Kamlesh Rawal, from Surat on behalf of the Brahmin community. The lawyer mentioned that he presented the social media post of Kashyap and his apology as evidence, which the Surat court accepted and issued a notice. The filmmaker or his lawyer has to appear before the court on the given date or they might take an unilateral decision.
Reports further suggest that another complaint has been filed against Anurag Kashyap in Mumbai by RTI activist Atish Tiwari. The controversy sparked when he shared his opinion about Phule’s ongoing row on his Instagram post. A user criticised his opinion and commented, “Brahmins are your father.”Anurag then reacted to the post and said, “Brahmin pe main mootoonga.. koi problem? (I will urinate on Brahmins… any problem?).” This created a rage on social media against the filmmaker, followed by a massive backlash.
Earlier this month, Anurag Kashyap posted a long note on his social media handles to apologise to the community. He wrote in Hindi (translated in English), “In anger, I forgot my limits while replying to someone. And I spoke badly about the entire Brahmin community. That community whose many people have been in my life, are still there and contribute a lot. Today all of them are hurt by me. My family is hurt by me. Many intellectuals, whom I respect, are hurt by my anger and my way of speaking. By saying such a thing, I myself deviated from my own point of view. I sincerely apologize to this society to whom I did not want to say this, but wrote it in anger while responding to someone's cheap comment. I apologize to all my friends, my family and the society for my way of speaking and for the abusive language. Now I will work on it so that this does not happen again. I will work on my anger. And if I have to talk about the issue, I will use the right words. I hope you will forgive me.”
