Filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar had once stated that the film industry might have "ignored" the late Sushant Singh Rajput. He made this remark while discussing the prevalent "boycott culture" against Bollywood films, a trend that had gained significant momentum over the past few years. Bhandarkar's comment highlighted the perceived neglect of Rajput's talent and contributions to the film industry, sparking a conversation about the industry's treatment of its own members. Shedding a light on the complexities of the Bollywood ecosystem, the filmmaker had said, “Maybe the industry ignored him.”

In a conversation with Maniesh Paul on his Podcast, Madhur Bhandarkar had said, “I have noticed that this (boycott) happened largely after the passing of Sushant Singh Rajput. Maybe the industry ignored him… He was from a non-film background and he came and he struggled… It was a very unfortunate, untimely demise and from there, the anger amid the public got aggravated. It is the public’s opinion.”

He further added, “It has happened many times before. Like in the case of Gangubai Kathiawadi, people watched it and it was nice. I think this (boycott culture) is a phase. If the film is nice and the content is strong, people will go and watch. People watched Kantara, The Kashmir Files, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, it’s not like people don’t go to watch the movies.”

For the unversed, the CBI has officially closed the case of Sushant Singh Rajput's death, giving a clean chit to actor Rhea Chakraborty after a four-and-a-half-year investigation. This brings an end to a highly publicised and dramatic case that had captivated the nation. The CBI's closure report concluded that Sushant's death was a suicide and not a homicide, with no evidence of foul play or criminal conspiracy. Rhea Chakraborty, who was Sushant's girlfriend at the time of his death, had faced intense scrutiny and was even arrested in a related drug case, but has now been formally cleared of all charges.

Sushant Singh Rajput was found dead in his Bandra apartment on June 14, 2020, just six days after his PR manager Disha Salian's passing. The Mumbai police initially investigated the case, classifying it as a suspected suicide despite the absence of a suicide note. The provisional post-mortem report revealed that the cause of death was asphyxia due to hanging.
