Ranveer Singh’s upcoming film Pralay has already attracted attention for its scale and unusual genre. The Jai Mehta directorial is being mounted as a post-apocalyptic survival thriller, set for release in 2027.

But one question has followed the project: is Pralay based on a real person or a true story?

Based on the information available from the makers, the answer is NO.

Is Pralay Based On A Real Person?

There is currently no evidence that Ranveer Singh is portraying a real-life figure in Pralay.

The film is being presented as a fictional post-apocalyptic thriller rather than a biopic or a dramatisation of a particular real-world incident.

Producer Hansal Mehta confirmed in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter India that “Pralay is not an adaptation.” He confirmed that the screenplay was developed by Jai Mehta and co-writer Vishal Kapoor as an original story.

Why Was Pralay Linked To José Saramago's Blindness?

The confusion came from online speculation that Pralay might be inspired by José Saramago's acclaimed novel Blindness. It started with a social-media post by Kalyani Priyadarshan, who stars opposite Ranveer Singh in the film.

According to The Times of India, Kalyani Priyadarshan was recommended José Saramago's 1995 novel Blindness by director Jai Mehta to gain a better understanding. Her post about reading the book became the trigger for online speculation that the novel could be connected to Pralay.

People quickly jumped to conclusions because of the familiar themes of the novel, including pandemic, social collapse and survival. Saramago's Blindness begins with a mysterious epidemic in which people suddenly lose their sight.
