Zubeen Garg Case: Former state DGP and Assam Chief Information Commissioner Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta has resigned from his position, citing moral grounds. His decision came after several RTI applications were filed against his brother, Shyamkanu Mahanta, who was arrest earlier related in the death case of Assamese and Bollywood singer Zubeen Garg. Notably, Shyamkanu was the one who organised the music festival at which the popular singer was set to perform. As per reports, Bhaskar Mahanta’s resignation came on Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma’s recommendation, citing a clash of interest.

Zubeen Garg was found dead in the water on September 19 in Singapore, the day before he was about to go on stage to perform. Seven people have been arrested on this matter, including Shyamkanu Mahanta. Others are-Garg's cousin, Sandipan Garg, a Deputy Superintendent in the Assam Police and his band manager, Siddharth Sharma, as well as two members of his band.

For the unversed, Shyamkanu Mahanta has been charged of murder, culpable homicide, causing death by a rash or negligent act, and criminal conspiracy. He has also been investigated over links to large-scale financial fraud, money laundering and the illegal acquisition of real estate assets. All the accused have been arrested until November 11 under the same charges.

Not only that, Zubeen Garg’s two private security personnels-Nandeswar Bora and Paresh Baishya - were also arrested. They were arrested after suspicious transactions worth over Rs 1.1 crore in their bank accounts. Investigators believed that they have some link to the case.

Assam Chief Minister Biswa stated that the chargesheet will be filed before December 17 and mentioned that Garg’s death was an act of murder and not an accident. A 10 member team has been investigating the case, which is led by Special Director-General Munna Gupta.

In October, the Singapore authorities submitted an autopsy report to their Indian counterparts. SIT is trying to investigate what happened in the last 48 hours of Zubeen Garg’s life. Notably, that exercise is more important since pharmaceutical drugs were found in his bag.
