A 25-year-old cab driver was brutally beaten with a stick by unknown individuals late on Friday night in Udyog Vihar Phase-4, Gurugram. The driver, who was seriously injured in the assault, was admitted to a private hospital, where he died during treatment.
Upon being informed by the hospital management, the police took custody of the body and launched an investigation. After notifying the family, the police have sent the body to the mortuary for a post-mortem. Police have stated that the matter is under investigation and CCTV footage from the vicinity of the incident is being examined. The accused will be arrested soon.
According to information, the deceased, 25-year-old Vikas, was originally from Khagaria in Bihar. He lived on rent in Sahraul village, Gurugram, and worked as a cab driver. His maternal aunt runs a tea and paan stall (khokha) in Udyog Vihar Phase-4 and also has a shack (jhuggi) on the roadside nearby, where Vikas would often stay at night.
Local residents reported that on Saturday night, some individuals severely injured Vikas by beating him with a stick and then fled the scene. An ambulance, alerted by people nearby, arrived and took him to the hospital, where he died. The hospital informed the police of the death, after which a police team arrived, made inquiries, and took custody of the body.
Senior officers, along with police from the Udyog Vihar station, arrived at the scene of the incident. After an initial inspection, they questioned people in the vicinity. A forensic team also collected evidence from the location.
According to the police, Vikas earned his livelihood as a cab driver. The stall near where the incident occurred is reportedly a site for illegal activities. The police have previously taken action against the stall operator. The shack has been removed several times but has always been rebuilt after a short while. The shack has been locked since the incident.
Local residents stated that the cab driver's wife left him several years ago and his brother works in Jharkhand. He lived here alone and would often visit the stall, sometimes staying the night.
Police are examining CCTV footage from the vicinity of the incident. However, a camera at the gate of a company opposite the scene did not capture the event as it was not facing the road. The police have begun their investigation of the footage.
