Kishtwar Encounter: An army soldier was killed after an encounter broke out between security forces and Pakistan-backed terrorists in Singhpora region of Jammu and Kashmir's Kishtwar district on Sunday, sources told jagran.com. Heavy gunfire resulted in the death of one soldier, while seven others were injured and taken to hospital for treatment.

Army Resumes Search Ops

After an overnight halt, security forces on Monday resumed a search operation in the upper reaches of Kishtwar district to nab terrorists hiding in the area. The operation was launched on Sunday in Sonar village near Mandral-Singhpora in the Chatru belt, officials said.

The operation was halted late Sunday night in the difficult terrain with dense greenery and steep slopes, which limited visibility and movement, officials said. Several teams of the Army, police and paramilitary forces, with the help of drones and sniffer dogs, are combing the area, while maintaining a tight security cordon to ensure that the terrorists do not escape, officials added.

A group of two to three terrorists affiliated with Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) is believed to be trapped in the area, officials said, adding that the operation resumed with the first light of day and was continuing till the last reports came in. Officials said there has been no new contact with the terrorists.

According to a jagran.com report, the security forces had received intelligence reports on the presence of Pakistani terrorists in the dense forest and hilly areas of Kathua, Poonch, Rajouri, Kishtwar, Doda, Udhampur and Reasi in the Jammu division. Since then, the security forces have maintained a sharp eye and enhanced vigilance in the area.

This marks the third encounter between security forces and terrorists in the Jammu region this year. Earlier, two encounters were reported in the Kahog and Najote forests in the Billawar area of Kathua district on January 7 and 13.
