Kolkata Weather Update: A week later than expected, the monsoon arrived in Kolkata on Tuesday, bringing with it steady rain and persistent cloud cover. “The Southwest Monsoon has further advanced into the remaining parts of north Bengal, and it has advanced over the entire south Bengal today,” said a Met bulletin issued on Tuesday morning.

On May 29, the monsoon arrived early in north Bengal this year. In north Bengal, the monsoon typically arrives around June 5. In South Bengal, the usual date is June 10.

In recent years, Kolkata has seen some of the wettest influxes of the southwest monsoon. Approximately 23 mm of rain fell on the city between Monday and Tuesday at 8:30 PM.

The clouds and rain considerably lowered the day's temperature. Tuesday's high temperature in Alipore was 28.4 degrees, which is more than five degrees colder than usual. For over three months, it was the lowest. The highest recorded temperature on March 22 was 25.5 degrees.

It is likely to move slowly west-northwestwards and become more marked over Gangetic West Bengal and the neighbourhood during the next 24 hours,” the bulletin said.

“On Wednesday, heavy to very-heavy rainfall (7-20cm) with extremely-heavy rainfall is likely in Purulia, Bankura, West Burdwan and West Midnapore; heavy to very heavy is likely in Jhargram, South 24-Parganas, East Midnapore, Hooghly, Howrah, Birbhum, and East Burdwan and heavy rainfall (7-11cm) is likely in the remaining districts of south Bengal,” the forecast said.
