Bengaluru News: A woman and a man were assaulted and humiliated in Indiranagar Layout, Kanakapura, near Bengaluru, after her relatives allegedly dragged them onto the street in a case of moral policing. The incident took place on Saturday and led to police action within hours.

According to officials, the woman, who had been married for 15 years, had separated from her husband recently. She was reportedly in a relationship with a fisherman from another community. On Friday, her relatives allegedly traced her to the man’s house. The next day, they confronted the pair in public.

Police said the group of relatives assaulted both of them using slippers and went on to partially shave their heads in front of bystanders. The assault drew attention from local residents, following which the police arrived at the spot and brought the situation under control.

A case was registered and seven people were identified as suspects. Five of them have been arrested and charged under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Officials confirmed that statements of the victims have been recorded and further questioning of family members, including women, is under way.

Both victims were admitted to a hospital for treatment. Later, the woman was shifted to a rehabilitation centre, where she is receiving counselling.

To avoid further unrest, additional police personnel were deployed in the locality. Authorities also organised a peace meeting with both families and community elders to restore order. Police said further investigation is ongoing.
