Coimbatore Rape Case Update: In a major update in the Coimbatore rape case, the officials on Tuesday informed that all the three accused arrested for allegedly kidnapping and raping a woman college student were drunk. The Coimbatore City Police Commissioner Saravana Sundar stated that the accused , identified as Thavasi, Karthik and Kaliswaran, kidnapped the victim from her friend's car and took her to a different location and sexually assaulted her. Apart from this, the police also informed that the accused smashed the windshield of the car with a stone and also attacked the victim's friend with sickle while kidnapping her.
While providing details, the officials informed that all the three accused are relatives, further clarifying that they are not associated with any political party. The police arrested the accused on the outskirts of the Coimbatore city and shot them at their legs after they attempted to flee and tried to attack the officials.
“The accused were trying to escape from the spot when the police had to shoot them in the leg in Vellakinaru, on the outskirts of Coimbatore city. The injured accused are Guna, Karuppasamy, and Karthik alias Kaleeswaran. All the accused have been sent to GH Coimbatore. A head constable was also injured in the encounter,” the commissioner was quoted as saying by ANI.
A political row also erupted on the matter after the opposition parties AIADMK and BJP slammed the MK Stalin-led DMK government for the "poor law and order". Leader of the Opposition Edappadi K Palaniswami (EPS) stated that the DMK government has failed to protect the women of the state. "Is there a functional police force under Chief Minister MK Stalin?" EPS asked.
Chief Minister MK Stalin expressed his grief over the matter by labeling the incident "inhumane" and directed the officials to take all the necesarry steps to ensure strict punishment for the perpetrators.
