The Delhi Gymkhana Club did not receive any interim relief from the Delhi High Court on Tuesday. The Central Government on Tuesday clarified in the court that it will not forcibly take possession of the club's land on June 5, but the process of terminating the lease and repossessing it will continue.

In its May 22 eviction order, the Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry stated that the 27.3-acre plot is required for strengthening and securing defence infrastructure and other important works related to public safety. 

High Court Refuses To Grant Interim Order

During the hearing in the Delhi High Court, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta stated that the Centre's May 22 notice was issued to terminate the club's perpetual lease and reclaim the land. However, any action to vacate the premises would be taken only after serving notice under the law.

Justice Avneesh Jhingan then ruled that no interim order was needed at this time. The court issued notices to the central government and the club management seeking their responses to the petitions filed by the club's members and employees.

During the hearing, the Centre also informed that the existing governing body of the club, composed of members nominated by the Central government, has already placed its grievances before the authorities.

Land Needed For Defence Infrastructure: Centre

The central government has ordered the Delhi Gymkhana Club to vacate 27.3 acres of land in Lutyens' Delhi. The order, issued by the Land and Development Office, stated that the area is of extremely sensitive and strategic importance, and that the land is needed to strengthen and secure defense infrastructure.
