Mathura Water Tank Accident: In a tragic incident, two people lost their lives while over a dozen sustained injuries when a 2.5 lakh litre overhead water tank collapsed in Krishna Vihar Colony of Uttar Pradesh's Mathura on Sunday. The collapse of the mammoth structure also damaged several nearby houses after debris fell on them. According to reports, the incident took place at 6 pm. While the police and the fire department first responded to the disaster, the Uttar Pradesh government has roped in the teams from Army and state disaster management teams.
Till now, 12 people have been pulled out from under the debris, with sources suggesting that their condition remains critical. The casualties are likely to rise as many people, including children, remained trapped under the rubble, officials said. The structure, built by the Uttar Pradesh Awas Vikas Parishad, was just three years old, District Magistrate Shailendra Kumar Singh said, adding that it was commissioned in 2021 and was completed in 2024. A hefty Rs 6 crore was spent on building the overhead tank, built by the Jal Nigam under the Gangajal Drinking Water Project.

Meanwhile, SSP Shailesh Kumar Pandey attributed the excess rain as the cause behind the falling of three-year-old structure.
"This incident occurred in the Krishna Vihar area where a 250kL tank collapsed due to excess rain. Rescue teams of the district reached the spot immediately and rescue operation began immediately. The District Magistrate and I immediately called the NDRF and SDRF teams as well. The injured have been shifted to the district hospital. We are still looking for people in the rubble to check for anyone trapped. No one is missing but we are still looking in case there are any external persons..." he said as quoted by ANI.
