Jagran Correspondent: Chief Election Commissioner of India (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar has been in the news since a media report emerged about the functioning of the poll body. He became the centre of political debate as the Opposition sought his resignation, accusing him of favouring the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The man, who finds himself in the middle of a political storm, comes from an academically distinguished family. It is unbelievable that his family includes four IAS officers, two IRS officers, one IPS officer, and approximately 28 doctors.
The family of India's Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), Gyanesh Kumar, has a highly distinguished career in the administrative services and education sector. It would not be an exaggeration to say that his family is one of the most educated in India.
Kumar is a 1988 batch IAS officer of the Kerala cadre. He graduated from IIT Kanpur and then earned a degree from the Harvard Institute for International Development. He currently holds the position of Chief Election Commissioner of India. His father, Dr Subodh Kumar Gupta, retired as Chief Medical Superintendent.
Daughters And Sons-In-Law In Civil Services
Kumar's elder daughter, Medha Roopam, is a 2014 batch IAS officer of the Uttar Pradesh cadre. She secured the all-India 10th rank in the UPSC. Shooting champion and state record holder Medha is currently the District Magistrate of Noida (Gautam Buddha Nagar) and has become the first woman DM to hold this post.
Her husband, Manish Bansal, Kumar's son-in-law, is also a 2014 batch IAS officer. His all-India rank was 53. Manish, who earned his B.Tech and M.Tech degrees from IIT Delhi, previously served as District Magistrate of Saharanpur and is now District Magistrate of Agra. The two met during their LBSNAA training.
Kumar's Second Daughter Is IRS Officer
Kumar's younger daughter, Abhishree, is an IRS officer. She is a member of the UPSC 2017 batch. She graduated from St. Stephen's College, Delhi, and secured an All India Rank of 297 in the UPSC 2017 exam.
Abhishree is currently posted as an Assistant Commissioner in the Income Tax Department, while her husband, Akshay Labru, is also an IAS officer of the 2017 batch. Akshay is currently posted as District Magistrate-cum-Deputy Commissioner in Jammu and Kashmir (Srinagar).
Kumar's younger brother, Manish Kumar, is an IRS officer. His sister Roli's husband, Upendra Jain, was an ADG-rank IPS officer in Madhya Pradesh.
