A 19-year-old woman was left critically injured after a man allegedly attacked her with a sharp-edged weapon in Vijayawada district, Andhra Pradesh, on Saturday. The man later died by suicide after jumping from the roof of a nearby house, police said.
The injured woman, identified as Mahalakshmi, was rushed to a government hospital after sustaining serious injuries, including wounds to her neck. She remains in critical condition and is undergoing treatment.
Police identified the man as Chennaiah, alias Monku Chennaiah. According to the preliminary investigation, he and Mahalakshmi had been in a relationship, and discussions had taken place between their families regarding marriage.
"Both had been in a relationship for some time. There were discussions among elders regarding their marriage. As they had not married yet, issues surrounding the marriage appear to have preceded the attack," NDTV quoted D Chandra Sekhar, Circle Inspector of Ajit Singh Nagar Police Station.
Man Dies After Attack
After allegedly assaulting Mahalakshmi, Chennaiah reportedly climbed onto the roof of a nearby house and jumped from the building. He died on the spot, police said.
The circumstances leading to the attack and Chennaiah's subsequent death are now being investigated. Police are questioning witnesses and examining the sequence of events to establish what happened before the confrontation.
"We are investigating the circumstances of the attack and the subsequent death. A full inquiry is being conducted, including whether the marriage proposal was rejected and what exactly led to the assault," CI Chandra Sekhar said.
No Previous Complaints
Police said neither side had previously lodged a complaint and no criminal cases had been registered against Chennaiah.

The man was originally from Srikakulam district and had been travelling to Vijayawada for painting work, according to police.
Investigators are now looking into the statements of witnesses and the circumstances surrounding the relationship and marriage discussions. Police are also checking whether any earlier dispute between the two may have preceded Saturday's incident.
