INDIA Bloc Meet: Amid the ongoing row over the alleged differences within the Election Commission of India (ECI), the meeting of INDIA Bloc began in Delhi. The senior opposition leaders, including Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, and Mamata Banerjee are expected to discuss the alleged irregularities and seek resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar. However, several key members of the alliance did not participate in the meeting, raising questions on the opposition's unity.

INDIA Bloc Meeting Key Agenda

The high-profile meeting was called in Delhi after an Indian Express revealed that two election commissioners had raised multiple objections during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral roll. The opposition leaders have earlier alleged that the revision exercise was conducted to benefit the BJP. In the meeting, the opposition is likely to prepare a roadmap to raise the issue and seek the resignation of the CEC.

Apart from this, they are also expected to seek accountability from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah. The opposition leaders have also sought judicial intervention into the matter by calling the alleged rift a threat to democracy.

Who Are Likely To Attend?

The senior Congress leaders Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, and Sonia Gandhi have attended the opposition's meeting. Apart from this, former West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee also joined the meeting with TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee. The other opposition leaders, including Tejashwi Yadav, Mehbooba Mufti, Supriya Sule, Omar Abdullah, and John Brittas also attended.

However, Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray and Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren joined the meeting virtually due to the prior commitments. Apart from this, Samajwadi Party Chief Akhilesh Yadav is also not attending the meeting due to other planned events. However, two senior leaders of the Samajwadi Party will join the meeting.

Amid the tensions with Congress, the DMK and Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP have decided to skip the meeting despite raising their concerns over the revision process. The absence of two major political parties has raised questions on the unity of opposition ahead of the key assembly polls.
