The Azad Maidan Police in Mumbai have registered an FIR against the organisers of the ‘Virat Garjana Morcha’, which was attended by MNS chief Raj Thackeray and Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray, for allegedly conducting the march without police permission. This comes after MNS Chief Raj Thackeray and Shiv Sena (UBT) Chief Uddhav Thackeray participated in the protest demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process of the electoral rolls. Meanwhile, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis criticised the protest criticised the protest and termed the Thackeray brothers as "Ghajinis". The CM said that the two leaders participated in the protest to regain lost ground and claimed the turnout was low despite the build-up around it.
The police stated that an FIR has been registered at Azad Maidan Police Station against the organisers in connection with Sunday’s morcha. The FIR has been registered under Sections 223 (Disobedience to an order duly promulgated by a public servant), 189 (Unlawful Assembly) and 190 (Liability of members of an unlawful assembly for offences committed in prosecution of common object) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Demand to scrap SIR
MNS Chief Raj Thackeray, while addressing the Sunday rally, demanded the scrapping of the SIR from the electoral rolls and suggested the reintroduction of ballot papers to hold elections. “Our demand is that the entire SIR conducted in Maharashtra should be cancelled,” he said. “There should be only ballot paper voting.”
Uddhav Thackeray on Sunday's agitation claimed that the gathering was not part of any particular political party’s agenda but a symbol of resistance to protect the nation, democracy and the Constitution. “Gyanesh Kumar is a weapon of the BJP,” Uddhav added.
Opposing leaders vouch for unity and democracy
During the Virat Garjana Morcha rally, Congress’s Balasaheb Thorat said, “We have a historical responsibility to save democracy and the Constitution. Let us unite for it.”
Hitting out at the opposition leaders, Maharashtra cultural affairs minister and BJP leader Ashish Shelar mocked the joint protest, calling it a ‘kolhekui morcha’ (march of foxes).
