Himachal Pradesh News: In a bizarre incident, a businessman in the Hamirpur district of Himachal Pradesh was left in a state of shock when he received an electricity bill of about two billion, Rs 2,10,42,08,405 to be precise, for December 2024. He could not believe the amount he had to pay, as last month he had received a bill of only Rs 2,500.
Lalit Dhiman, the businessman from Beherwin Jattan village, reached the regional electricity office after receiving the bill that was "unbelievable". The electricity office revised his bill to Rs 4,047 after he lodged the complaint. The electricity office explained that the wrong amount was filled in the bill because of a technical glitch. The office affirmed that the businessman needed not to worry as the amount was revised and later apologised for the inconvenience.

Last year, in a similar incident, a resident of Noida Sector 122 was left surprised after he was served an electricity bill of Rs 4 crore for three months. Basant Sharma, a railway employee, was in Shimla for an official training when he received the electricity bill through an SMS notification, leaving him in a state of shock. Sharma was given very few days to clear the dues to get rid of any penalties.
He contacted the regional electricity office and claimed that the bill was not true and demanded a probe into the matter. The electricity office stated that there was an error in the meter reading, leading to the huge bill. They further added that the amount will be revised soon and the recipient need not worry. Sharma stated that he was the only one using the electricity in the building, and the consumption mainly involved usual electrical appliances.
However, both of the incidents were due to a technical glitch that the electricity department later described as "rare".
