A policeman was brutally murdered in Punjab’s Barnala late on Sunday night. The incident took place around 11.30 pm on Sunday when the Kabaddi players were fighting with the restaurant staff at 22-acre market in Barnala. The constable, posted at City Police station, was accompanied by two colleagues in India.
According to police, the players had an argument with the police personnel, Drahan Singh (50), when he tried to intervene to stop the scuffle between both parties. The accused assaulted the policeman, seriously injuring him after which he was admitted to the Civil Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 crore for the family of the deceased constable. Mann said Rs 1 crore will be given by the state government and HDFC Bank will provide Rs 1 crore in it.

Police have identified four kabaddi players including Parmjeet Singh alias Pamma, Jugraj Singh alias Raja, Baljeet Singh and Gurmeet Singh. All of them are absconding while police are also looking to nab other unidentified accused.

According to eyewitnesses of the incident, after beating the policeman, the accused vandalized the restaurant and escaped from the spot. A case was also registered under section 302 (punishment for murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against all the accused.
