Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday made a strong pitch for the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), asserting that establishing a secular provision was essential for eradicating discrimination in society. Addressing an event at National Unity Day in Gujarat, PM Modi also backed a simultaneous election move, a provision his cabinet has given its nod to.

“Today we are all seeing the success of One Nation Identity – Aadhar and the world is also discussing it. Earlier, there were different tax systems in India, but we created the One Nation One Tax System – GST. We strengthened the country’s power sector with One Nation One Power Grid. We integrated the facilities available to the poor through the One Nation One Ration Card,” PM Modi said.

PM Modi said implementing ‘one nation, one election’ will strengthen democracy and make sure the resources are utilised to the fullest.

“Under these efforts of ours for unity, we are now working towards One Nation One Election, which will strengthen India’s democracy, which will give optimum outcome of India’s resources and the country will gain new momentum in achieving the dream of a developed India. Today, India is moving towards One Nation One Civil Code that is a Secular Civil Code,” he added.

He also acknowledged Article 370 abrogation from Jammu and Kashmir, asserting that it was a hindrance in the implementation of the Constitution.

“Article 370 was like a wall, hindering the implementation of our Constitution. It has now been buried forever,” PM Modi said.

PM Modi is in Gujarat, his home state, to celebrate Diwali and participate in the Rashtriya Ekta Diwas event. The event featured an Indian Air Force flypast and a floral tribute to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel at the Statue of Unity in Kevadia.
