In a major turn of events in the Twisha Sharma death case, the Central Bureau of Investigation has now officially taken over the controversial case that was lodged at Katara Hills Police Station in Bhopal. ANI citing sources said the agency has re-registered the FIR against mother-in-law, Giribala Singh and husband Samarth Singh. 

A CBI team has already reached Bhopal, and the investigation will commence from Tuesday. The Bhopal Police were earlier investigating the case on charges of dowry death, harassment of a woman and death related to Twisha Sharma. 

The case has been registered by CBI in the said matter under Sections 80(2), 85, and 3(5) of the BNS and Sections 3 and 4 of the Dowry Prohibition Act. The CBI will now examine allegations of dowry death, harassment, criminal conspiracy and other possible offences in the case.

The FIR registered by CBI mentioned that Twisha was married to Samarth Singh on December 9, 2025. The victim was then allegedly subjected to dowry harassment by her in-laws since the marriage, and mental and physical torture.

According to the FIR, it was reported to the police that Twisha had died at around 10:20 PM on May 12, 2026. The Supreme Court held that it did not form any opinion on the allegations. It is the duty of the investigation agency to look into each and every aspect. The family of the victim was requested by the Supreme Court to make their grievance before the investigation agency and not to pass comments in the media or in public.

The media was also requested not to record statements of witnesses and potential accused, as doing so could jeopardise the investigation. These orders and comments were made by a bench of Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi during a suo motu hearing in the Twisha Sharma death case.

On May 12, former model and actress Twisha Sharma was found hanging at her in-laws' home in the Katara Hills area of Bhopal. Twisha's parents have accused her in-laws of dowry harassment and abetment to suicide. However, Twisha's in-laws have claimed that she was a drug addict.

The Supreme Court took suo motu cognisance

The Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognisance of media reports regarding Twisha's death and has begun hearing the case. Police have filed an FIR against Twisha's husband, Samarth Singh, and her mother-in-law, former district judge Giribala Singh, on charges of dowry harassment.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Madhya Pradesh government, stated that the CBI would take over the investigation today and that a team of AIIMS doctors, under the direction of the Madhya Pradesh High Court, had conducted a second post-mortem examination of Twisha's body.

Regarding Twisha's death, the Solicitor General said, "One thing is clear: the girl has taken her own life. Whether it was suicide or something else. For her parents, having a divorced daughter is better than having a dead one. Her messages indicate that she is living in hell."

A second post-mortem was conducted by a team of forensic experts from AIIMS Delhi. Twisha’s father, Navnidhi Sharma, said the family directly spoke to the AIIMS doctors before the procedure and was assured of a fair process.
