Sawan Fasting Food: The Sawan month has already begun on July 11 and will conclude on August 9. This is one of the most auspicious months and considered most sacred in Hinduism. Celebrated the whole month, this period is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is a journey of devotion and spiritual blessings. As devotees pray and fast during the Sawan Somwar, they follow a sattvik diet in the context Ayurvedic, which emphasises clean, natural and energetically pure foods that support both body and soul. These foods are believed to promote clarity, calmness, and a balanced state of mind. They are typically fresh, unprocessed, and easily digestible, often including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds and dairy products (excluding yoghurt).
A Sattvik diet during Sawan stay clear of items that are believed to increase tamas or rajas in the mind and body. The idea is to create a sattvic (pure and balanced) state that aligns you with the high vibrational energies of this sacred month. Here are some of the Sattvik foods that you can eat during the Sawan month and foods that you must avoid.
Sattvik Food To Eat During Sawan Month
Dairy Products
Dairy products like milk, curd, paneer and buttermilk are considered sattvik and are rich in calcium and protein. These products help keep your energy levels stable and full for longer.
Fruits
Fruits are essential part of Sawan fasting. They not only keep them hydrates but also supply necessary vitamins to the body. Maintaining energy levels can help you keep full throughout the day. Fruits like apples, oranges, watermelons and papayas are the best to include in the diet.
Sabudana
Sabudana is a go-to fasting food and is known for its high carbohydrate content. The ingredient can be make delicious dishes like sabudana kheer, sabudana khichdi, tikki and vada.

Nuts And Seeds
Nuts and seeds like almonds, cashews, walnuts and pumpkin seeds are nutrient-rich and provide healthy fats and protein. This keeps the hunger pangs at bay and provide sustained energy too.
Samak Rice
A light and easily digestible millet is great for replacing regular rice in many fasting dishes. Some of the popular dishes prepared from barnyard millet are pulao and khichdi.

Foods To Avoid During Sawan
Grains And Cereals
Whole grains and cereals are usually avoided during the Sawan month. Wheat, oats, rice and other grains are avoided. Use fasting alternatives like samak rice and buckwheat flour for better health.
Garlic And Onion
Garlic and onion are considered tamasic and are believed to generate heat in the body, which is not considered ideal during fasting.
Non-Vegetarian Foods
Fasting during the Sawan month requires a complete shift to a vegetarian diet. Incorporating meat, eggs, fish, alcohol and even caffeinated beverages is strictly restricted during the period.

Legumes
Legumes and certain veggies, including beans, lentils, tomatoes, brinjals and leafy greens are usually excluded from the menu.
Table Salt
Regular or common salt is usually avoided during this period; instead, sendha namak is added to the menu as it is considered suitable for fasting.
