Mumbai suburban commuters are expected to face disruptions as Western Railway (WR) will conduct several mega blocks over weekends between Goregaon and Kandivali stations. The mega blocks have been announced to complete the 4.5 kilometres of the 6th line and it will affect train operations, starting August 27. According to a WR release on Monday, five 10-hour mega blocks will be implemented on weekends from August 27 to October 6, aiming to minimise passenger inconvenience.
WR General Manager Ashok Kumar Misra stated that the work is scheduled for completion within 35 days, but no construction will occur between September 11 and 17 due to the Ganeshotav. Misra explained that, due to limited space on the east side of Malad station, the new 6th line will be laid on the west side, requiring the existing five lines to be shifted accordingly.
The project will impact both long-distance and suburban train services. Long-distance trains may experience delays of 15 to 20 minutes, while 100 to 140 suburban services will be cancelled and around 40 services will be short-terminated on weekends.

"WR has scheduled to carry out the work during the night hours so as to cause minimal disruptions on weekdays. Trains running from Bandra Terminus will be regulated by 40-45 minutes on September 28-29 and October 5-6 when non-interlocking work will be undertaken on the 5th line between Goregaon and Kandivali," it said.

The 5th line from Bandra Terminus is operational, and the 6th line is currently functional between Khar and Goregaon. The ongoing work aims to extend the 6th line from Goregaon to Kandivali, with plans to expand it to Borivali further, enhancing capacity, reducing congestion and improving connectivity.
