Bhadrapada Purnima 2025: Significance

In the Hindu calendar, each lunar month has a Purnima, or full moon day, and an Amavasya, or no moon day. The full moon night is viewed as spiritually and religiously important. The month of Bhadrapada is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, making Bhadrapada Purnima highly significant. The Bhadrapada month gets its name from the eastern or northern Bhadrapad Nakshatra, which appears on the Purnima, or full moon day, during this time.

Bhadrapada Purnima also marks an important transition as Pitru Paksha or Shradh begins on the following day. For followers of Lord Vishnu, Bhadrapada Purnima carries immense devotion and faith, as they worship Lord Satyanarayan with prayers and rituals. According to Hindu legends, it is believed that seeking his blessings on this day brings peace, prosperity and spiritual strength into their lives.

Bhadrapada Purnima 2025: Rituals

On Bhadrapada Purnima, those who observe the day wake up early and start with morning prayers. Many people bathe in holy rivers such as the Ganga, Yamuna or Narmada, as this is believed to bring spiritual benefits. The Bhadrapada Purnima Snan on this day is done with the belief that it will bring the blessings of Lord Vishnu and is a key act of faith on this day.

The Satyanarayan Puja is also observed in many homes during this period. Panchamrit Snan of Lord Satyanarayan is performed on this day, which includes a special bath with milk, curd, honey, sugar, and ghee. People offer fruits, sweets and prayers to the deity with devotion. The puja includes reciting the Satyanarayan Katha. It is believed that attending or holding this katha brings good luck and blessings to the home.

Many devotees also observe the Bhadrapada Purnima Vrat, a fast kept throughout the day and concluded after the evening recital of the Satyanarayan Katha. Those observing the fast abstain from consuming grains, pulses, and salt, while fruits and milk products are permitted. This vrat is seen as a way of demonstrating discipline, devotion and gratitude towards the Lord.

Bhadrapada Purnima is a highly auspicious period to do the Maha Mrityunjaya Havan, which grants blessings of good health. Performing charity on this day is additionally considered auspicious. Devotees donate clothes, food, or anything needed to Brahmins and people in need.
