Tragedy struck the family of a jeweler from Mawana during a pilgrimage to Mata Vaishno Devi, as his wife and her sister were killed in a devastating landslide.

Heartbreaking scenes unfolded on Thursday morning when their bodies arrived home in an ambulance provided by the Jammu administration. Relatives and neighbors wept inconsolably, creating a deeply sorrowful atmosphere. Later, their final rites were performed at the Juddi cremation ground.

The tragic accident occurred around 3 pm on Tuesday, August 26, when a landslide hit a 200-meter stretch of the path to Mata Vaishno Devi near Ardhkuwari. Jeweler Amit Verma, a resident of Mawana, was traveling with his wife, Neera Verma; their 10-year-old daughter, Vidhi; his brother-in-law, Mayank; his sister-in-law, Chandni; and Chandni's mother-in-law, Neeta Goyal. They were suddenly caught in a torrent of water carrying rocks and trees.

Amit's wife, Neera, and his sister-in-law, Chandni, died instantly in the accident, while Amit, his daughter, and two other relatives were injured. The local administration rushed everyone to a hospital, where doctors pronounced Neera and Chandni dead. After a post-mortem, the Jammu administration arranged for their bodies to be sent home by ambulance late at night.

After traveling through the night, Amit arrived at his home in Mawana with the bodies around 10:15 am on Thursday. Family members broke down upon seeing them. Later, at the funeral, the husband, Amit, lit Neera's funeral pyre. Everyone present was moved to tears during the ceremony.
