Following Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s intervention, the discrepancy in reservation norms in the Lekhpal recruitment process is set to be corrected. The Uttar Pradesh Subordinate Services Selection Commission (UPSSSC), which issued an advertisement on December 12 for the recruitment of 7,994 Lekhpal posts, had come under scrutiny for not adhering to the prescribed 27 per cent reservation for Other Backward Classes (OBC).
After concerns were raised, the Revenue Board informed the UPSSSC that the category-wise vacancies will be revised. The updated figures are expected to be sent to the commission within a week. As per the original advertisement, 4,185 posts were earmarked for the unreserved category, 1,446 for Scheduled Castes, 150 for Scheduled Tribes, 1,441 for OBCs, and 792 for the Economically Weaker Section (EWS).

The issue was flagged by Panchayati Raj Minister and SBSP national president Om Prakash Rajbhar, who wrote to the Chief Minister highlighting the alleged deviation from reservation norms. Taking cognisance of the matter, the Chief Minister directed officials to ensure strict compliance with the reservation policy.
Revenue Board Commissioner and Secretary Kanchan Verma stated that the initial requisition sent to the UPSSSC was prepared on the basis of roster-based calculations at the divisional level, factoring in both vertical and horizontal reservations.

However, fresh data at the district level regarding serving and vacant Lekhpal posts has now emerged, prompting a reassessment of the category-wise vacancy distribution. Based on this, the advertisement issued by the commission is likely to be revised.
