As Nepal heads to the polls today, the Himalayan nation stands at a critical political crossroads. Nearly after 6 months a wave of unprecedented Gen-Z protests forced Nepal’s then prime minister KP Sharma Oli to quit, people of Nepal have begun voting in a general election that is shaping up to be a high-stakes showdown between the old guard and a powerful Gen z.

While the younger generation, particularly Gen Z voters in urban centers like Kathmandu, signals a deep exhaustion with the traditional guard, KP Sharma Oli remains the most formidable face of the established order.

The spotlight of this election is fixed on the Jhapa-5 constituency. In what is being described as a high-stakes battle, the youth-backed influence of figures like Balen Shah is directly challenging Oli in his long-standing stronghold. Despite leading a coalition government as Prime Minister in 2024, Oli’s recent tenure was marred by intense youth-led protests in September 2023. Demonstrators took to the streets over systemic corruption, unemployment, and controversial social media bans. The subsequent police crackdown, which resulted in several fatalities, led many to believe Oli’s political journey had reached its sunset. However, his candidacy today proves his resilience.

Making Of Communist Leader

Born in 1952, Khadga Prasad Sharma Oli’s political identity was forged during the "Panchayat" era, a period when political parties were outlawed under the monarchy. By 1970, a teenage Oli had already embraced communist activism, risking his freedom to oppose the party-less system.

His defiance led to his arrest in October 1973 for his involvement in the Jhapa Uprising and anti-monarchy movements. He spent the next 14 years behind bars, including four years in solitary confinement. Analysts often point to this grueling period as the source of his rigid political philosophy. Having seen how easily power can be suppressed, those who emerged from the Panchayat-era prisons often believe in exercising authority with an iron fist.

Nationalist Surge Of 2015

Oli’s defining moment on the national stage arrived in 2015. Following the adoption of Nepal’s new constitution, relations with India soured, leading to a months-long blockade of essential goods like fuel and medicine at the southern border.

Oli successfully framed this crisis as a struggle for national sovereignty and dignity. His defiant stance resonated deeply with the public, triggering a nationalist wave that propelled the Left Alliance to a landslide victory in 2017, making him the strongest Prime Minister in recent memory.

However, his dominance was short-lived due to internal party friction. In December 2020, he attempted to dissolve Parliament, a move later overturned by the Supreme Court. A second attempt to dissolve the House in May 2021 triggered a constitutional crisis, ultimately forcing him to step down. Today’s vote will determine if the veteran leader can once again navigate the shifting tides of Nepali politics.
