  1. Trump confused India with Brazil regarding presidential election on social media.
  2. He claimed 125 million people voted in India's presidential election.
  3. Netizens quickly pointed out the gaffe, India lacks direct presidential vote.

United States President Donald Trump has gone viral again after appearing to confuse India with Brazil in a social media post about presidential elections. Trump on Monday claimed that 125 million people had voted in the first round of India's presidential election and that the results were announced on the same day. However, netizens quickly noticed the mix-up as India was not holding any presidential election and its President is not elected through a direct public vote.

Trump Confuses Brazil With India

Trump made the claim on his Truth Social platform as Brazil held the first round of its presidential election on Sunday. His post appeared to refer to India, while the details matched Brazil's election. “125 Million People voted today in the first round of India’s Presidential Election. The results came out shortly after the vote closed, on the SAME DAY!” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

Trump used the same post to criticise the US electoral system, calling it “corrupt.” He claimed that election results in some American cities and states take much longer to be announced. “In Detroit, Philadelphia, California, and numerous other U.S. Cities and States, the results, with much smaller numbers, will often take weeks to Rig, I mean, calculate. Voting in America is CORRUPT!!! President DJT,” the post added.

Netizens Notice Mix-Up

As the post went viral, netizens pointed out the gaffe, calling it incorrect. The criticism intensified as India was not holding a presidential election at the time. The fact that Indian voters do not directly elect the President also added to it. Many commented that Trump meant to refer to Brazil where the first round of presidential elections concluded on Sunday.

The election saw incumbent Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and Senator Flavio Bolsonaro emerge as the leading candidates. However, as neither secured enough votes to win outright, the two candidates are now set to face each other in a runoff.

This is not the first time that Trump has confused the names of places. Earlier, he had confused Armenia with Albania during a radio appearance. He had mistakenly stated that a peace deal had been brokered between Azerbaijan and Albania. The recent post now appears to be edited with Brazil written in place of India.
