Imran Khan sister egg attack: Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan’s sister, Aleema Khanum, was struck by an egg outside Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail on Friday, sparking a sharp police response and strong reactions on social media.
Video footage circulating on social media shows the egg hitting Aleema Khanum on her chin before sliding onto her clothes as she was addressing reporters. The attack came after a hearing in the high-profile case of Toshakhana against Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi. Although the attack was unexpected, Aleema kept calm and asked her supporters not to react. "Koi baat nahi, jaane do (It's fine, let it go)," she can be heard saying in the viral video.
Rawalpindi police confirmed the arrest of two women over the incident. Officials identified the women as Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) supporters who allegedly hurled the egg after Aleema dodged questions asked by reporters. Reporters had grilled her over allegations made by journalist Tayyab Baloch, who accused her of misusing donation funds to buy property. Baloch had also accused him of receiving threats after questioning her.
Strongly condemn the disgraceful act of throwing an egg at Aleema Khanum, sister of former Prime Minister Imran Khan. No political disagreement should ever justify such disrespect. Pakistan’s politics need dialogue, not humiliation. #AleemaKhanum #StayStrongAleemaKhan pic.twitter.com/U5e2J1djPc

Political Backlash And Social Media Frenzy
The incident has sparked fierce backlash on social media. Some PTI supporters criticized the act as unethical and harmful to civilized debate. "Differences in opinion are one thing, but civility and respect should never be forsaken," a user posted on X (formerly Twitter). Others attributed political intentions to the incident, accusing Pakistan's military establishment and the governing Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) of masterminding the attack with the purpose of targeting Imran Khan's family.
The Toshakhana scandal still haunts Imran Khan. He was sentenced to three years in jail in August 2023 for illegally auctioning gifts worth more than PKR 140 million (USD 500,000) given by the state and was convicted. The case against both Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, was put off on Friday. The next hearing is set for September 8.
