Riding the wave of success, the Indian cricket team boasts an impressive six-match winning streak, with their latest win being a resounding 100-run victory over defending champions England in Lucknow.
As the team disembarked, fans were delighted to spot India's captain, Rohit Sharma, accompanied by his wife, Ritika Sajdeh. Shortly after, the likes of Jasprit Bumrah, R Ashwin, Shubman Gill, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Shami, Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan, and Indian head coach Rahul Dravid, among others, followed suit in the team bus. However, the absence of Hardik Pandya, who is nursing an ankle injury was noticeable.

The upcoming clash at the Wankhede Stadium holds historical significance, as the last time India and Sri Lanka crossed paths on this iconic ground was in the final of the 2011 ODI World Cup. With a rematch set for the 2023 World Cup, memories of that epic showdown are sure to resurface. Notably, only Virat Kohli, R Ashwin, and Angelo Mathews remain from the World Cup squad of that edition.

India's aspirations are crystal clear: they aim to secure a spot in the semi-finals with a victory over Sri Lanka. In contrast, Sri Lanka is currently battling Afghanistan at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune in a must-win situation. India, buoyed by their consistent success will be seeking to extend their winning streak.
Following their convincing win against England, India reclaimed the top spot in the Cricket World Cup 2023 points table, accumulating a perfect 12 points. Their exceptional net run rate of +1.405 further strengthens their position in the tournament. A victory against Sri Lanka would guarantee their place in the knockout stage.
On the flip side, the reigning champions, England, find themselves on the brink of elimination after suffering their fifth defeat in the tournament. South Africa closely trails India in second place, securing five wins and boasting a net run rate of +2.032, giving them a total of 10 points. Sri Lanka is on the fifth spot currently, with four points in five matches with a negative NRR.
