IND vs AUS: RP Singh, who was recently appointed as part of the national selection committee, revealed how team India's ex-head coach Rahul Dravid had said that Gill will be becoming India's new all-format captain. Rahul Dravid had informed RP Singh way back in 2021, when Gill hadn't even played for India in any of the formats.
“Just before he (Dravid) became the coach, we were having a conversation. When you sit down with a senior player, one does get talking. I asked him ‘We have so many captains in our team, who do you think will be the prominent captain of the Indian team?’. We had many captains, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya. he said ‘Shubman Gill’," RP Singh was quoted as saying to Sony Sports.
He was also asked when he had this talk with Dravid, and he replied that it was way back in 2021. “‘He isn’t playing any of the three formats.’ I told Dravid. He replied, ‘Leave that, he has a lot of potential. If not today, then tomorrow, nobody will be able to stop him. He will be the Indian captain and will serve his position well. Dravid had said this when he was not playing any of the formats".
Gill was part of India's U19 team of 2018 when Rahul Dravid was their coach.
Gill To Be India’s All-Format Captain?
Shubman Gill has replaced Rohit Sharma as India's new ODI skipper for the series against Australia. This decision marked the end of Rohit Sharma's four-year stint as captain, during which he led the country to the summit clash of the 2023 ODI World Cup and also helped the team win the 2025 Champions Trophy.
Gill also became India's new Test captain and is most likely to lead the team in all formats. He had replaced Rohit in the longest format, who had announced his retirement from this format earlier this year. In his first Test series as the captain, Gill led the team to a 2-2 tie in the five-match Test series.
At the same time, he was also India's vice-captain in the Asia Cup 2025 and is most likely to replace SKY as India's new T20I skipper.
