T20 WC 2026 Squad: Gautam Gambhir, who is the head coach of the Indian cricket team, didn't say anything to the reporters about Shubman Gill's snub from the T20 World Cup team. When he landed at the Delhi airport just a few minutes after the team was revealed, he was surrounded by a lot of reporters asking about his reaction to this decision.

But he didn't reply to any question and was seen walking directly towards his car.

His silence spoke a lot as the selectors made a bold call by dropping Gill from the squad.

Gill made a comeback to the shortest format in the Asia Cup 2025, where he replaced Sanju Samson as the opener but was seen struggling as he had scored just 291 runs after playing in 15 matches at a strike rate of 137.26 and hadn't scored a single half-century, with his highest individual score being 47.

Injuries then affected his performance even more. He was ruled out of the last T20I against South Africa owing to a toe niggle, and Samson replaced him and scored a brilliant knock of 37 runs off 22 balls. Since both Gill and Jitesh Sharma were dropped, Samson will now open with Abhishek Sharma in the mega event. Axar Patel is the new vice-captain of this team.

Gill is struggling in this format, but India captain Suryakumar Yadav’s record is equally poor.

He has scored just 218 runs after playing in 19 matches at a strike rate of 123.2, and that's his worst form ever since he made his debut. And unlike Gill, he is still a part of the team.

As per PTI, his captaincy and not his performance helped him stay in the team.

“SKY, who by virtue of being the skipper, kept his place despite a horrific one-year run, while Gill suffered as his game didn’t seem as impactful as Abhishek Sharma’s," the report said.

The crux of this report is that captaincy got him time and not anything else.

The difference might be thin. This report also sent a stern reminder that scoring runs is non-negotiable under Gautam Gambhir.

“Anyone who knows Gambhir knows that for him, ‘winning is not everything but the only thing’. Today it was Gill, tomorrow it could be Suryakumar," it concluded.
